The purpose of the inlet diaphragm is as follows: Since the fresh gas outside the resonance speed of the crankcase tends to be pushed back into the inlet channel by the piston, a membrane is attached between the crankcase and the inlet channel. It works like a non-return valve and thus ensures better filling of the crankcase, and thus also the combustion chamber. The disadvantage of this membrane, however, is that the incoming fresh gas is now exposed to a flow resistance. In order to reduce this effect, the inlet duct is dimensioned much larger in engines with an inlet membrane than in conventional engines.
